Rule 183: If It Should Happen that Some Living in a Brotherhood Should Have a…
Since the Lord said: ‘Grant, Father, that as I and thou are one, so they also may be one in us’; and the apostle wrote: “being of one accord, of one mind “1; and the Acts tell that “they that believed had one heart and soul,”2 those who have a disagreement are alien from the character we have described. But reasonable love keepeth the saying: “He that loveth chasteneth diligently.”3 But love not according to reason, whatever it be, is unacceptable, for the Lord said: He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.”4
Notes
- Phil. ii. 27.
- Acts iv. 32 ἣν before τῶν πιστ.**.
- Prov. xiii. 24.
- Mt. x. 37 ἀγαπῶν for φιλῶν**; suggests that the nice distinctions of modern scholars between the two words were not appreciated by B. any more than they were by the writer of Jn. xxi. 15–17 (in v. 17 φιλεῖς με; is said τὸ τρίτον—this would lose its force if anything different from the foregoing was being said).
