St Basil the Great, tr. Lowther Clarke, 1925

39. Rule 39: What of a Man Who Obeys and Yet Murmurs? (R. 71)

Since the apostle said: ‘“Do all things without murmurings and disputes,”1 the murmurer is alienated from the unity of the brethren and his work cannot be used by them.2 Such a man is clearly suffering from unbelief3 and failure in regard to hope.

Notes

  1. Phil. ii. 14.
  2. See on B. 38.
  3. This is explained by B. 38. His faith fails and he does not see Christ in the Superior. Cf. F. 28.
