Chapter 62
Wherefore again the prophet says:1 In that2 day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen: that body3 of Christ, which, as we have said before, is born of David, he plainly declares as after death rising from the dead. For the body is called a tabernacle.4 For by these words he says that He who according to the flesh is of the race of David will be Christ the Son of God; and that He will die and rise again, and that He is in aspect a man, but in power God; and that He Himself will be as judge of all the world and as the only worker of righteousness and redeemer—all this the Scripture declared.
Notes
- Cf. c. 38.
- Amos ix. 11.
- Or “flesh”; and so throughout the passage.
- Cf. Wisd. ix. 15 (R. V.): “For a corruptible body weighs down the soul, and the earthly frame (τὸ γεῶδες σκῆνος) lieth heavy on a mind that is full of cares:” 2 Cor. v. 1: ἡ ἐπίγειος ἡμῶν οἰκία τοῦ σκήνους: and cf. σκήνωμα in 2 Pet. i. 13f. For the use of σκῆνος in the sense of “body” in Greek literature, see Field, Notes on N. T. Translation, p. 183; and Stephanus, Thesaurus Gr. Ling., ad vocem.
